REMINDER #2: End of the school year approaches, write that letter.
School finals are the first week of April and the girls are on summer
holiday after finals.
This is an excellent time to write a letter to your Butterfly encouraging
her through finals and asking about summer holiday plans.
Grades come out during end of April.
The new school year begins again the first monday of June.
For a more complete information on school holidays, see the following email
from Sr. Margaret. I was going to formalize but decided it wasn't
necessary: the letter is charming! For your reference, "the rains" means
the monsoon season which can flood streets, down communication lines and
stop transportation for several weeks.
My dear Deanna,
The school year begins on the first Monday of June normally and ends on the
last day of April..though the children are on vacation soon after the exams
which are held in the first week of April. Then the teachers have to
correct
the exam sheets and prepare the results. They have vacations for about five
weeks and this is the long summer vacation. Then they have the short summer
vacation after the rains and usually these vacations are made to coincide
with the festival of Divali..this is the festival of lights. It marks the
new
year according to the Hindu calendar. Light is supposed to banish the evil
spirits, the spirit of darkness. Everyone lights up the house with oil
lamps or electric bulbs in colours. [Fire]Crackers are fired to dispel the
evil
spirits. The shopkeepers open up new sales registers. These vacations usually
last for about three weeks. At Christmas the christian schools have a
weeklong holiday and at Easter they have four days. There are many public
holidays to celebrate Hindu festivals and also to celebrate the major
Muslim
feasts..then there is Independence Day the 15th of August... Republic day
the 26th of January and other festivals of the Jain, Sikh and Buddhist
religions.... We Indians love to celebrate and work as little as possible.
Nowadays there are the unofficial cricket world cup holidays which the
cricket fans just take without anyones permission.
Our children are preparing for their exams...the Xth standard Public Board
exams are on. We are having a bit of trouble with some of the senior girls.
A few days ago
a group of them escaped from school to go to a movie.
Life is never dull
Yours lovingly
Margaret Mary r.m.i.
