January, 2016

Dear friends, benefactors, and all well-wishers,

I am sure you will welcome fresh news from your favorite “children’s home Regina Pacis”!

Let me first thank you all for your interest and collaboration which encourages us in our endeavor to make a Home for so many needy and homeless children. As you know from past communications, the children in our care come from broken homes, single parent families, and families with acute economic problems and social problems such as alcohol, child abuse, wife abuse, and who are orphaned of one or both parents.

The main objective of our Institution is OPPORTUNITY , a chance to get a complete secondary school education which will permit young women to go on to a university education.

This is something they would never be able to aspire to if they continued in the situation mentioned above. For purposes of academic education we have our own government recognized and subsidized High School in a Day regime and Night regime and for those who have started very late we have the N.I.O.S. (National Open School) affiliated to the Delhi Educational Board. Through the years, hundreds of our girls have thus been able to successfully achieve a university education and have gone into good careers such as nursing, teaching, computer engineering. Others are happily married and some have started their own business.

Apart from the academic education we try to give them an all-round education by giving them an opportunity to develop their social and artistic talents such as drawing and painting, singing, elocution dance (Oh how they love that!) and lately they have organized library reading to encourage them to read the children’s classics. We have developed a library of about 1000 books all donated by kind people, who have even donated book cupboards...at least two of them have been donated by the Shinhan Bank.

Speaking of the Shinhan Bank this is well worth sharing with you. For the last seven years this Bank (a Bank with headquarters in South Korea) has adopted our Childrens’ Home as their social project and their contribution to the uplifting of young women. With this in view, a group of the Bank, from the General Manager to the last member of the staff, come to us on one Saturday every month and they spend about two hours interacting with the children in different activities such as Quiz competitions, craft, making greeting cards and many other activities. The ShinHan Bank also gives an annual scholarship to those who have completed Std X and wish to carry on with a university education. It is to help them pay the college fees, buy the books they need, pay for their transport and if they have to live once more away from home, to help towards the hostel fee.

The Christmas celebration this year, too, was very grand. The children had their annual party with splendid gifts donated by Mr. Michael who, for more than twenty years, has celebrated his birthday on the 23rd of December with our children. He is a caterer so every year on his birthday he supplies a splendid lunch for all the members of this family of Regina Pacis. He brings snacks for mid celebration and then a royal lunch with waiters and all that makes the children feel special and good.

The children give a short performance and have some games and then they receive their gifts complete with Santa Claus and all. Added to our pleasure every year the elder children accompanied by a member of the staff go to a Home for the aged called “the Shelter” and they bring the elderly ladies on a bus to join us in the festivities. Some of the elderly are so handicapped that they have to be helped by actually carrying them into the bus and feeding them at lunch. The children delight in doing this. The elderly ladies also receive gifts donated by a young man named Inder.

This year after lunch the children had the added delight of going to a Carnival on the grounds of the Cricket Club . This was organized by a group of ladies from the Rotary Club, and to distinguish our children from the hundreds of others who were there the ladies gave each girl a t-shirt (pink with a bunny rabbit on the front) and each lady looked after a group of ten children…so no one was lost! The crowning joy was the gift to each of them of a colourful school bag with some stationery.

We wish all of you the very best for 2016, and look forward to hearing your news.

Yours lovingly
Margaret Mary Fernandes r.m.i.
